Breathe in the fresh air as you cruise along the scenic coastline. Take a leisurely ride on the National Cycle Route, enjoying the peaceful countryside. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, Gatehouse has the perfect cycling path for you!
1 - Gatehouse 'The Cape'
Distance: 1.3 miles.
Duration: 30 minutes with a balance bike or scooter
Alternative route to avoid High Street includes a short flight of steps. The route is flat.
This ride takes a short trip on the edge of Gatehouse of Fleet village on quiet roads and surfaced track, suitable for families with young children on bikes, balance bikes, scooters and on foot.
2 - Roon The Watter
Distance: 6.1miles
Duration: 40-80min
This circular route is a local tradition and there is a 10km organised run around it every summer. It’s all on road, so suitable for all bikes. It starts with a steady uphill, then after a steep downhill to the river is gently undulating back into Gatehouse.
3 - Sandgreen Circular
Distance: 10 miles
Duration: 1-1.75 hours
This is a wonderful ride through beautiful deciduous, bluebell woods on an off-road route to Sandgreen and/or Carrick beaches and the Cream o’ Galloway. The surface is fairly smooth so it is suitable for touring, mountain, gravel and/or trail bikes, but not road bikes. It’s a fairly flat route with a nice downhill to the beach and uphill from it taking in a possible cheese and/or icecream from the Ethical Dairy.
4 - Gatehouse to Creetown
Distance: 11.5miles
Duration: 1.5-2.5 hours each way
A long but gentle uphill out of Gatehouse to Gatehouse Station, then a flat and exposed stretch. Followed by a wonderful, long downhill next to Moneypool burn.
5 - Kirkcudbright Circular
Distance: 24 miles
Duration: 2.5-4hrs
This is a beautiful on-road route to Kirkcudbright for shopping or just a visit, which takes in quiet Borgue back roads. Suitable for any bike, Note: there are various options to cut this ride shorter, returning by various B-roads, also option to ride in the opposite direction.
6 - Circular - part off-road to Gatehouse Station
Distance: 19.5miles
Duration: 3-5hours
After 4 miles of mostly uphill along the road towards Laurieston, you follow Forestry tracks which require a mountain/gravel bike. The views are spectacular moors and forests all the way to the Gatehouse Viaduct. From Gatehouse Station it’s a lovely downhill all the way back to Gatehouse.
7 - Castle Douglas Circular
Distance: 33.7 miles.
Duration: 3.5-6 hours
This ride takes in the best of Galloway scenery; rolling farmland, tidal reed beds, beautiful Laurieston Forest and spectacular views over the Fleet valley and coastal islands.
The route is hilly in places with a total of 1,300ft (396m) of ascent. Refreshments available in Gatehouse of Fleet, Twynholm, Threave Gardens and Castle Douglas. Full range of shops in Castle Douglas. Toilets in Gatehouse, Threave Gardens and Castle Douglas.
